Ammonia leak in Mission shuts down highway

Hazmat team on scene to address issue

An ammonia leak in Mission that shut down a portion of the Lougheed Highway between Murray Street and Norrish Avenue has stopped and emergency services crews have cleared the scene.

Mission Fire/Rescue Service responded to the call around 3 a.m. at BC Frozen Foods.

The incident has brought in Mission RCMP, BC Ambulance and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services' hazmat team.

Earlier in the call, the Coast Guard was called in to stop fishing between the Mission Bridge and north of Hatzic on the Fraser River, and the CP Rail traffic was shut down.

According to Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson, a pressure relief valve on the cooling unit failed, which caused the leak.
