Abby man dies cliff-jumping at Cultus Lake

A 26-year-old Abbotsford man apparently drowned after jumping into Cultus Lake from a cliff near Lindell Beach on Saturday.

A 26-year-old Abbotsford man apparently drowned after jumping into Cultus Lake from a cliff near Lindell Beach on Saturday.

Chilliwack RCMP said a friend of the victim called 911 at about 4:20 p.m. to report his friend had jumped into the lake and did not resurface.

Police said the fatal jump was video-taped by one of the four friends who were cliff-jumping that day.

"The first male climbed to approximately 80 feet on the cliff and was video-taped entering the water in an awkward position," Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

"The man was seen descending into deeper water, and did not resurface," she said.

The man's body was recovered at about 7:30 p.m. by an RCMP dive team, assisted by Chilliwack search and rescue volunteers, who arrived earlier with two boats.

"This is a very tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim and the friends who had to witness the accident," Wolbeck said.

There was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the accident, she said.

The victim's name is not being released, pending notification of family.

RCMP and the B.C. Coroners' Office investigations continue.
