Abbotsford student earns bronze at international chemistry event

Ji Sup Kim of Abbotsford has returned from an international chemistry competition.

An Abbotsford student earned a bronze medal in a recent international chemistry competition.

Ji Sup Kim, a recent graduate of Yale Secondary, placed 111th out of 291 students attending the 45th annual International Chemistry Olympiad held July 15 to 24 in Moscow, Russia.

He qualified for the event after completing a written exam that advanced placement chemistry and physics students write each year at Yale and at schools across Canada.

Kim placed among the top 10 in the nation, advancing to the Canadian competition in June at the University of Toronto.

From there, four competitors were selected for the international level, joining participants from a total of 75 countries.

Students completed written exams and laboratory tests and were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals depending on their final scores.

Kim begins attending the University of Toronto next month to study life science.
