The Walmart Supercentre at Highstreet shopping centre was evacuated on Sunday night after a man yelled out that he had a bomb.

A man declaring he had a bomb led to the temporary evacuation of the Walmart Supercentre location at Highstreet shopping centre on Sunday night.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said police were called to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. after reports that a man had entered the store and yelled out, “I have a bomb!” and then added “I’m just joking.”

The store was evacuated as a safety precaution as police searched for the man, based on witness reports and store video footage.

They were not able to locate him, and no bomb was located.

MacDonald said social media reports that a similar incident had occurred at a Tim Hortons location on Sumas Way, also on Sunday night, appear to be incorrect.

Although police might have received such a report, there is no verification that such an occurrence took place at the location, MacDonald said.
