A lovable amputee dog at the Abbotsford SPCA needs the public's assistance to fix a deformed leg and find a home.
Stanley, a two-year-old retriever cross, lost his front-left leg after he was hit by a car when he was just three months old.
He is happy and friendly, but with his remaining front leg seriously deformed, the SPCA is worried for Stanley's long-term health. Concerns about the leg have also deterred a half-dozen would-be owners from adopting him.
The SPCA hopes to solve both problems by having a specialist build a cast and orthopedic brace for Stanley to help correct the leg and avert the early onset of crippling arthritis.
"It's going to help him adjust that bone," said Abbotsford BC SPCA manager Jodi Dunlop. But such a brace doesn't come cheap, and the cost is pegged as high as $1,500.
The SPCA is hoping the public can step up to help pay for Stanley's operation, along with medical treatment for him and other animals in need.
Dunlop, who calls Stanley "an incredible dog," hopes that addressing the leg issue will also help find a home for the three-legged pooch.
"He's wonderful with people and kids and other dogs so we want to give him a chance at a good, healthy long life rather than a short painful one," she said. "He's quiet, he's hot a yapping dog, he's super curious."
