The Abbotsford school district will continue supporting one of their partner agencies’ golf tournament, but it wasn’t without some hesitancy by the board.
For the past several years, the district has given Archway Community Services (ACS) $500 toward its annual fundraising tournament. However, the district has already given money to ACS this year, and an administrative procedure (AP) reads that no organization will be given money more than once a year.
Trustee Shirley Wilson noted that approving the donation would be to go against their AP, which is under the superintendent’s purview and not the board’s. Wilson has been suggesting for three years that the AP is reviewed to allow such donations.
“Sorry to my friends at Archway,” she added, while speaking against the motion. Trustee Jared White wanted to know more about how much is donated annually and to which groups before approving the donation. Both trustees voted against the donation.
Trustee Stan Petersen said that he would support the donation, because it’s a small amount compared to the benefits they get from taking part in the tournament.
He encouraged other trustees to support the donation but “at the same time have this conversation” about the procedure.
With just two trustees voting against it, the donation will go through. A motion was not made to ask the superintendent to review the AP.
