Abbotsford recorded nine collisions in an eight-hour period during Tuesday's heavy rains, according to local police.
Const. Ian MacDonald said a total of 16 vehicles and one pedestrian were involved in the crashes in the period from 3:45 to 11:30 p.m. There were no serious injuries.
MacDonald said many of the incidents involved drivers attempting to make left turns at busy intersections.
One, which occurred at about 5:50 p.m., resulted in a 14-year-old girl being taken to hospital as a precaution after she was struck by a Ford F-150.
MacDonald said the girl was proceeding on the walk signal at a marked crosswalk when she was hit by the pickup, which was travelling east on Old Yale Road and making a left turn onto McMillan Road.
The girl was released from hospital with minor scrapes and bruises.
Another crash occurred about a block away from the intersection of Marshall and McCallum at about 7 p.m., when a driver came to sudden halt and attempted to make an illegal left turn on a double solid line.
This resulted in a chain-reaction collision with three other cars that were travelling behind the lead car.
In three other crashes, drivers went entirely off the road, including a pickup truck that hyrdo-planed in the area of Ackerman Court and DeLair Road and collided with a parked motor home.
MacDonald advised motorists to be more cautious, particularly with seasonal bad weather and more cars on the road at night during the busy holiday shopping season.
"We are appealing to drivers to slow down, avoid distraction, ensure your vehicle is equipped for the weather conditions, and pay attention to other persons and vehicles around you," he said.
