Abbotsford will receive more than $27 million from the Growing Communities Fund, the provincial government announced Friday (March 3).
The fund was created for infrastructure and amenities projects, including supporting affordable housing, upgrading water management facilities and building recreation centres.
Local governments are responsible for determining how the grants will be allocated based on the needs of their communities. It’s not yet clear how Abbotsford will use the money.
A total of $1 billion will be disbursed across 188 municipalities and districts by the end of March.

Abbotsford-Mission NDP MLA Pam Alexis said the “historic investment” will enable the city to fund key projects.
“The people of Abbotsford and Mission count on their local governments for the infrastructure that creates vibrant and healthy communities,” she said.
“As a former mayor, I know how important it is for municipalities and the province to work together on investing in the future and making sure communities have what they need to thrive.”
Alexis said growing communities put pressure on local governments to meet increased strain on infrastructure and amenities, including roads, transit, water and electrical systems, community centres, parks and social services.
