An Abbotsford Police officer who has been with the department since 1992 is the 2012 recipient of the Paul N. Tinsley Scholarship.

Sgt. Mike Drebit was presented with the honour on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the monthly meeting of the Abbotsford Police Board.

During his time with the Abbotsford Police, Drebit has served in a multitude of roles, including with patrol, the bike squad, the riot troop, the crisis negotiation team and integrated border enforcement.

He is now with the professional standards branch, as one of three officers who investigate public complaints.

The scholarship will be used toward his studies which he began last year at the Justice Institute in family mediation and conflict resolution.

The $2,000 award is presented annually to an Abbotsford Police member who is pursuing further studies.

Tinsley was a former officer and deputy chief with the Abbotsford Police Department who died of cancer in 2005.

After his retirement from policing in 2004, he became a full-time faculty member in the department of criminology and criminal justice at University of the Fraser Valley.
