The Abbotsford Police Department is developing a policy for its use of in-car digital video cameras.
The department currently has the cameras installed in five patrol cars and five traffic cars, but they have not yet been activated.
Police Chief Bob Rich said at last Tuesday’s meeting of the Abbotsford Police Board that there are still many issues to be worked out over use of the cameras. The policy is looking at issues such as when the cameras will be used, how the footage will be stored and who can view the recorded data.
A date has not yet been set for when they become operational.
RCMP detachments throughout B.C. and the Integrated Road Safety Unit have been using the cameras in their traffic cars for about two years, and they are considered particularly useful in impaired driving cases.
