Social media is helping the Abbotsford Police close in on an accused sex offender who is wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant.

Stephen Edgar McCreary, 61, was being investigated for sexual offences, and fled from Abbotsford in July.

Charges against him were sworn in Abbotsford provincial court in early October. He is accused of 13 sexual offences, four counts of aggravated assault and one count of forcible confinement. Details of the alleged crimes cannot be reported due to a publication ban.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the story and photo on the APD Facebook site has 3,000 shares. That means 3,000 people read the story and sent it to another Facebook user. The number of people who have read the story is considerably higher.

McCreary is believed to be in Moncton, N.B., and Abbotsford Police have been in touch with law enforcement there. They have also contacted friends and family members McCreary has in the region.

“We’re honing in on him,” said MacDonald. “We have mustered a group of people who are interested in helping us catch him.”

McCreary has resided in both Abbotsford and Chilliwack for the past 10 years, and police believe he left B.C. because he knew about the investigation.

He is a former truck driver, and it’s possible he might be working in the field again. He is 5′ 9″ and weighs 180 pounds. He has brown eyes and short grey hair.

This is the first set of criminal charges he has faced.

Anyone with information about McCreary’s whereabouts is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225, police in their area, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
