A suspected impaired driver rear-ended a marked police vehicle while driving a vehicle with "two-and-a-half tires" early Sunday, said Abbotsford police Const. Ian MacDonald.
At around 1:30 a.m., an officer was traveling on Townline Road and noticed another vehicle coming up fast behind him. The officer made an effort to get out of the way but his vehicle was struck, and the other vehicle came to rest on the shoulder.
"He was driving on one rim, but on the other side of the car he actually had one of those… temporary tires," said MacDonald.
The suspect is a 43-year-old man from Abbotsford and MacDonald said he has had some interactions with police in the past involving driving. The police officer involved suffered minor injuries.
Charges have yet to be laid, but police are recommending a charge of impaired driving and refusing to provide a sample.
MacDonald added that police have considered that the driver may have been in an earlier accident and are asking the public for any information they may have, though the damage to the tires may have been from a different incident.
The man was driving a red 1991 Plymouth Acclaim.
