Abbotsford News nominated for B.C. awards

B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers has announced finalists in the annual Ma Murray Awards.

The special section Taking Refuge Seeking Relief has been named as a finalist in the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association's annual awards.

The Abbotsford News has been nominated in several categories of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association’s annual awards.

The Ma Murray Awards are presented April 26 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, where the three nominees in each category find out who takes first, second and third place.

The News has been nominated in its circulation category for the Newspaper Excellence Award, along with the North Shore News and Vernon Morning Star.

Sports editor Dan Kinvig has been nominated for a Sports Writing Award for his piece “Jasper’s Journey: Basketball star shares his battle with mental illness.

Editor Andrew Holota has been nominated for a Special Section Award for “Taking refuge, seeking relief,” which detailed the Syrian refugee crisis. Holota travelled to Jordan and Lebanon in November with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Reporter Alina Konevski, now working at the Abbotsford News, is nominated for Best Feature Series for “Living with mental illness,” which she wrote while employed at the Chilliwack Progress.

The News has also been nominated in the following categories:

– Ad Campaign Award (Collaborative) – Karin Lee for Clayburn Dental and Shelby Maryniuk for Magnuson Ford; and

– Website and Online Innovation Award – Cristine McDonald and Andrew Franklin for Your Best Shot/The Next Generation Amateur Photographer of the Year Contest.
