An Abbotsford mushroom farm has been handed a fine of more than $150,000 from WorkSafeBC after operating without a proper first aid attendant.

According to the WorkSafeBC report, Highline Mushrooms West Limited was observed repeatedly lacking a qualified first aid attendant at its mushroom growing facility.

"The firm failed to ensure it provided first aid attendants and services adequate for promptly rendering first aid to workers," the report stated.

As a penalty for this violation, the Abbotsford business was given a fine of $152,309.88.

This comes only a few months after nearly 400 workers at various Highline mushroom farms in Abbotsford and other B.C. cities made history when they joined the United Food and Commercial Workers 1518, becoming the largest group of farmworkers to unionize in Canadian history.
