The man killed in the shooting yesterday in Abbotsford has been identified as Jagvir Malhi, 19, and police say his death is linked to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.
Police have not released his name, but he has been identified through various online sources. They have also not said how Malhi’s killing is specifically tied to the gang conflict, including whether he, or someone he knew, was directly involved.
Malhi is a 2017 graduate of W. J. Mouat Secondary, where he played on the basketball team, and a criminology student at University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.
A friend of Malhi’s told the Abbotsford News that he was a “good kid” with no gang ties.
No new information has emerged into the shooting, which took place at about 3:30 p.m. Monday in the area of Ross and Simpson roads in Abbotsford.
Police who arrived at the scene found Malhi gravely injured, and he was transported to hospital by air ambulance, but died shortly afterwards.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which is leading the investigation, posted on Twitter on Tuesday morning that work is continuing in the investigation, but there are “no further details at this time” and nothing to report to media.
A press release issued later in the day also had no new details, other than to indicate that the killing was “not random” and is linked to the gang conflict.
The shooting took place near Ross Road Elementary, but schools in the district were closed for the day to commemorate Remembrance Day.
“This shooting occurred near a public school – a blatant disregard for the safety of our community. We are fortunate that school was not in session at the time,” said Cpl. David Lee of IHIT.
Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448, email email@example.com or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
This is the seventh Abbotsford-related murder this year and the third deadly shooting since Oct. 3.
On that day, Varinderpal Gill, 19, of Abbotsford was fatally shot while in a car at The Junction Mall parking lot in Mission.
Then, on Oct. 18, Mandeep Grewal was gunned down at the CIBC bank at South Fraser Way and Clearbrook Road in Abbotsford. He was the brother of gang leader Gavin Grewal, who was the victim of a targeted hit in North Vancouver on Dec. 21, 2017.
