An Abbotsford man was sentenced last week in Vancouver provincial court for child pornography offences.

An Abbotsford man who previously pleaded guilty to five sexual offences against two boys under the age of 10 has been sentenced to two years in jail followed by three years’ probation.

The man, 61, whose name is under a publication ban that protects the boys’ identities, was sentenced Friday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on charges of making child porn, distributing child porn, possession of child porn, and two counts of sexual interference.

The three additional charges – another count of sexual interference and two counts of invitation to sexual touching – were stayed.

Four of the five charges to which the man pleaded guilty involved one boy, and the fifth – sexual interference – was in relation to the boy’s older brother.

According to information presented at the start of the man’s trial, the offences took place sometime between October 2005 and April 2011, when the boys and their mother were living with the man.

He was arrested in the Abbotsford home in April 2011, following a tip by U.S. authorities, and the two boys were removed and placed in foster care.

Police seized evidence that included two laptop computers, a computer tower and several CDs.

Analysis of the items turned up two videos and several photos that fall under the Criminal Code category of child pornography.

The videos showed a man and a young boy, who was identified as the younger of the two brothers. The videos had been sent through a Yahoo account to a man in North Dakota.

Police at the time said it was unusual and disturbing to find such images created on a local level; people charged with child pornography offences usually access videos and photos made in other countries.

The older boy later provided statements to police that led to the final charge.

The man’s trial began in October on the eight charges, but he changed his plea the following day.
