Abbotsford gravel pits extending their hours

Despite concerns raised by local residents, two gravel pits have been granted extended operating hours.

Despite concerns raised by local residents, two gravel pits have been granted extended operating hours.

The Pan Pacific Quadling Quarry, located at 40251 Quadling Rd., and Fill Tech Industries Ltd. (located on Long Acres Jersey Farm, lot 260) also on Quadling Road, will now operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, during standard time and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. during daylight savings time. Formerly the pits ran 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

However, under the new agreement, no blasting, drilling or processing will be allowed after 5 p.m. or on Saturdays.

“It’s a compromise,” said Jim Gordon, the city’s general manager of engineering and regional utilities, adding that it’s not what either the public or the companies want.

Abbotsford Coun. John Smith wanted the decision deferred for six months, to see if new equipment being brought in by the gravel companies would be quieter for the neighbours.

“Let’s see how the equipment works, see how it goes before extending the hours,” he suggested.

But other councillors disagreed and approved the new hours.

Gravel agreements are reviewed every year.
