$41.5 million to be spent to widen Lougheed Highway in Mission.

Upgrades part of a $70-million strategy for the Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission corridor.

Areas of the Lougheed Highway in Mission are going to be expanded to four lanes, thanks to a new partnership with the provincial and federal governments

On Friday morning, it was announced that joint funding of $41.5 million will be spent to make significant improvements to Highway 7 through Mission.

Jati Sidhu, MP for Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon and Marc Dalton, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, joined a group of local politicians and dignitaries to make the announcement.

Crews will widen 3.1 kilometres of Highway 7 from two to four lanes, and install a concrete median barrier between Silverdale Avenue and Nelson Street in Mission. This project will help increase the capacity of this busy stretch of highway. Once completed, this project should improve safety, access and traffic flow for local residents, tourists and commercial drivers.

These Highway 7 upgrades are part of a $70-million strategy for the Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission corridor to accommodate increasing traffic demands and regional growth in this area.

“The contracting out will be happening by the end of March as part of the first phase and the construction is going to be starting in July and completed by winter,” said Dalton.

The remaining phases should be completed by winter 2018-19. More than 200 jobs are expected to be created over the life of the corridor enhancement project.

“I am so pleased to be here… I travelled this highway back in the days when I was working in Maple Ridge and used to live in Mission. I know first-hand how dangerous it was. Now with the cement dividers coming in, it’s going to enhance safety for people travelling throughout the day and night,” said Sidhu

The federal government is contributing up to $22.45 million for the $70-million safety and capacity improvement project for the Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission Highway 7 corridor  and the provincial government is contributing $47.55 million.
