“The cracking sound that so many patients find unsettling during adjustments is not your actual bones cracking,” Kniajev says.

The “cracking sound” during a chiropractic appointment can be unnerving to many people but what exactly is that sound? Is it actually your bones cracking or is it something else?

Dr. Andrew Kniajev, a licensed, evidence-based chiropractor at Newleaf Total Wellness is here to reassure us that the cracking sound we hear during adjustments is nothing to be worried about.

“The cracking sound that so many patients find unsettling during adjustments is not your actual bones cracking,” Kniajev says. “That sound is carbon dioxide gas being released from between your joints. It can be quite loud and unnerving, but there’s nothing to be concerned about.”

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractors don’t actually ‘crack bones,’ as many believe. They primarily manipulate joints, and in doing so they help patients with alignment issues, range of motion, everyday aches and pains and much more.

“We work with a diverse patient group and ensure we meet everyone’s individual needs and comfort levels,” Dr. Kniajev says. “We can use a variety of other methods to help patients who are not good candidates for joint manipulation, like soft tissue release, which is frequently used on seniors and even children suffering from physical discomfort.”

Will a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Adjustments shouldn’t be painful by any means, Dr. Kniajev says.

“I make sure all of my patients are thoroughly educated before we start any type of treatment. During the initial patient appointment we discuss what issues they’re concerned about and then develop an individualized care plan that is suited to what the patient can tolerate and what will best resolve their concerns.”

How can chiropractic care help?

Chiropractic care can help people of all ages and in all stages of life, from children to seniors and every age in between.

People often feel inclined to tolerate or ‘just live with’ their daily aches and pains, utilizing pain-relief medication and other at home remedies. It’s important to know though, that leaving aches and pains unresolved can impact your emotional and mental health, not just your physical health. Chiropractors can provide relief for a variety of issues, and can also provide assessments and referrals if your particular problem turns out to be beyond their scope of practice.

“At Newleaf Total Wellness Centre I work closely with doctors and specialists trained in a wide-variety of fields. Having so many specialists under one roof really allows us to use a full-circle approach to treating our patients.” Kniajev says.
