MCC Thrift stores have been trusted all around North America for more than 50 years.

The ‘back of house’ at MCC thrift store in Abbotsford is a near constant buzz of activity. The large, spacious room has been divided by sales category, and cheerful volunteers like Peter Doerksen are busy sorting, organizing, cleaning and pricing donations before they can hit the sales floor.

Doerksen, who’s been volunteering for the past four years, even has his own little section marked off – “Pete’s Chop Shop.” Here, Doerksen and fellow volunteer Don Andres ensure wheelchairs, clocks, vacuums and similar donated items are clean, working well and safe for resale.

Doerksen takes a special interest in caring for the wheelchairs in particular. An amputee himself, who lost part of his right leg in a serious motorcycle accident, he takes each individual wheelchair apart for a thorough cleaning before reassembling and testing them for safety and comfort.

“We’re proud of the work we do here and it feels good to know what we do is making a difference in our community,” Doerksen says. “Our hard work helps fill a gap for those struggling in this economy. It provides them with clean, well-made, safe products that they can feel confident using.”

Doerksen is just one of more than 300 dedicated volunteers in the big, extended family that is the backbone of MCC thrift stores. In fact, it takes almost 10,000 volunteer and staff hours every month to operate a store the size of the Abbotsford location!

The money earned at MCC locations helps support international and local initiatives. Locally the funds support numerous programs, such as the rent bank, a weekly community meal and outreach program, programs dedicated to helping women and men dealing with domestic abuse, a highly regarded program for Indigenous neighbours, and the settlement of newcomers in Canada.

It’s never been easier to support MCC’s international and local initiatives and programs!
