ICBC data reveals Abbotsford's most dangerous crash locations

According to ICBC, the Clearbrook Road off-ramp had a total of 184 crashes in 2023. That is the highest in Abbotsford.

A crash occurred at the Clearbook Road off-ramp at least once every two days in 2023.

According to crash data released by ICBC earlier this month, that stretch of road was Abbotsford's most dangerous with 184 crashes last year.

It's the second straight year that that the Clearbrook Road off-ramp, which connects to Highway 1 and Marshall Road, was Abbotsford's busiest crash spot. It was also tops in 2022 with 188 crashes. Over the past five years of data, it leads the way locally with 796 crashes.

Off-ramps and connecting lanes to Highway 1 dominate the top of Abbotsford's list for 2023, with the McCallum Road off-ramp area in second place at 132 crashes. The Sumas Way off-ramp was third with 118. Rounding out the top-five include two more off-ramps, with the Mount Lehman-Highstreet Road-Highway 1 intersection at 99 and the Whatcom Road-Highway 1 intersection at 91.

 

 

The first area not related to Highway 1 to make the list is the Blue Jay Street-Fraser Highway intersection in sixth at 84.

Rounding out the top-10 is Fraser Highway-Mount Lehman (83), Gladwin Road-South Fraser Way (61), Clearbook Road-South Fraser Way (59) and Clearbrook Road-Peardonville Road (54).

Some noticeable drops from 2022 include: Marshall Road-McCallum Road (52, down from 64 in 2022) and Bradner Road-Fraser Highway (35, down from 61 in 2022).

Prior to the Clearbook Road off-ramp holding down the top spot in 2023 and 2022, the Sumas Way off-ramp led the way in 2021 and 2020. Clearbrook Road was the crash hot spot in 2019.

The Clearbook Road off-ramp was also Abbotsford's most treacherous in 2023 as far as casualty crashes go. Casualty crashes are those resulting in injury or fatality. There were a total of 51 on that stretch of road last year, or about one a week. Sumas Way was second at 47, McCallum Road had 44, Clearbrook Road-South Fraser Way was at 33 and Whatcom Road off-ramp also had 33.

Over the five years of date compiled by ICBC, the Sumas Way off-ramp has had the most casualty crashes at 334 or about 66 per year. Clearbrook has had 307, Mount Lehman at 245, McCallum at 234 and Clearbrook Road-South Fraser at 174.

The most dangerous intersection to be a pedestrian over the past five years has been Clearbook Road-South Fraser Way, with 14 crashes involving pedestrians. Clearbrook Road-Peardonville Road and Peardonville Road- South Fraser Way both had eight.

The McCallum Road off-ramp had the most crashes involving motorcycles with nine, the Mount Lehman off-ramp had eight, while Bradner Road-Fraser Highway and the Cleabrook Road off-ramp had seven.

For cyclists, the most dangerous section is South Fraser Way-Trethewey Street, with 10 crashes over the past five years. Gladwin Road-South Fraser Way had nine and Clearbrook Road-South Fraser Way and Peardonville Road-South Fraser Way both had seven.

The month of December was the busiest in the province for crashes in BC over the past five years, with an average of 6,981 from 2019 to 2023. October was second at 6,845 and November was third at 6,802. The least likely month to have a crash was March with an average of 5,265.

The most common age group to be in an accident over the past five years in B.C. was those aged 26 to 35, with an average of 15,935 per year. Second was 36 to 45 at 13,427 and third was 46 to 55 at 11,629. One interesting note was that those aged eight to 12 are involved in almost 400 more crashes per year (1,236) than those aged 13 to 15 (882).
