The Sandy Hill team of Owen S., Ruba A., Armaan M. and Kennedy H. have had tremendous success.

Four Sandy Hill Elementary students have helped lead their school to the Grand Challenge round in the Reading Link Challenge competition.

Owen S., Ruba A., Armaan M., and Kennedy H. defeated other local schools to win the Abbotsford Reading Link Challenge in March and then emerged victorious at the Community Challenge division on April 23. They competed and won against teams from Chilliwack, Delta, Fraser Cascade, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, Port Coquitlam, and White Rock for the Community Challenge event.

They will now represent the Fraser Valley at the Grand Challenge and test their wits against teams from Coquitlam, North Vancouver City, New Westminster and Surrey. That event is set for May 7.

"We are so proud of the Sandy Hill team,” stated Sandy Hill principal Cathy Erickson. “They’ve shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm, and we’re excited to
cheer them on in the Grand Challenge."

The Reading Link Challenge (RLC) is a literacy program that promotes the 'sport of reading' among Grade 4 and 5 students through a series of trivia-style competitions based on six selected books. The event is run though a partnership between the Fraser Valley Regional Library and local school districts.

The challenge progresses through four levels:

  • School Challenge – Teams compete within their school.
  • Library Challenge – School winners face off within their FVRL branch.
  • Community Challenge – Winning teams from all FVRL branches compete.
  • Grand Challenge – FVRL’s top team competes against those from Coquitlam, North Vancouver City, New Westminster and Surrey
