A man is in custody and another has been seriously injured following an early-morning assault in downtown Chilliwack early Thursday morning.

The incident happened just after 12 a.m. on Yale Road on Aug. 1, in the area around Williams Street and Fletcher Avenue. It was the second attack that Chilliwack RCMP responded to within just a few hours that night; the other happened earlier on Fairfield Island.

The call for the Yale Road attack was reported as "an assault in progress with a possible weapon," Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment RCMP stated in a press release later that day.

The man who was injured was physically assaulted and he was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"At this time in our investigation there is no indication of a weapon being used," Cpl. Brett Urano said.

Officers quickly identified and arrested a suspect at the scene, and he remains in custody.

Police are asking for anyone with information to call Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 and quote file 2024-32579.

It was a busy night for emergency responders that night as RCMP were called to a shooting where a man was seriously injured on Avalon Avenue around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.
