A man who was involved in the stabbing of a fellow inmate in Abbotsford in 2023 has been sentenced to an additional three years in jail.

Dylan Chatkana, 26, was recently sentenced in Abbotsford provincial court after previously pleading guilty to assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

Chatkana was among three men charged in relation to the stabbing on Oct. 22, 2023 at Matsqui Institution.

The victim, who survived, required life-saving measures from first responders before he was airlifted to hospital.

Also charged in relation to the incident were Rylie Homeniuk, 26, and Joel Reed, 33. Their cases are still making their way through the courts.

At the time of the stabbing, Chatkana was serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2016 at the age of 15 – and tried as an adult – for the 2013 fatal stabbing of a rival gangster in a Winnipeg restaurant.

Meanwhile, Homeniuk is also facing a manslaughter charge for an assault that occurred at Kent Institution less than one month after the stabbing at Matsqui Institution.

In the Kent incident, inmate Dale Ahpay died in what Correctional Service Canada said was an assault by fellow prisoners on Nov. 20, 2023.

Also charged with Ahpay’s death are Skylar Cook and Jordan Steinhauer.
