A man was arrested Sunday night during a "dynamic" police incident that shut down Highway 1 in Chilliwack.

It happened east of Annis Road around 7:20 p.m. on Nov. 10 where Chilliwack RCMP were called to a single-vehicle incident on the highway.

"The man allegedly had a weapon in his possession and was making threats. After a short standoff, the man surrendered to police and he was taken into custody," Cpl. Brett Urano, BC RCMP spokesperson, stated in a press release.

At the time of the incident, it was described as a "significant police event" and firefighters were advised to avoid the area.

Chilliwack RCMP are continuing their investigation and charges against the man are being recommended.

“This was a dynamic situation and Chilliwack RCMP utilized all available resources to protect the public. Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the Integrated Emergency Response Team for their assistance in protecting all parties involved,” Urano said.

RCMP did not state whether or not they found a weapon on the man.

The highway was closed to ensure public safety.

Chilliwack RCMP thanked the public for their patience during the highway closure.
