Blasting at a quarry on Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford is believed to be the source of a loud boom felt by residents on Thursday morning (April 10).

Police in Abbotsford have indicated that the source of a loud boom heard and felt Thursday morning (April 10) is believed to be blasting at one of the quarries on Sumas Mountain.

Dozens of reports about the boom were made to police and on social media at around 9:30 a.m. after residents in the Sandy Hill/Clayburn neighbourhood – and beyond – felt the blast rattle their homes.

“Thought a car hit my house,” one resident posted.

“Made me jump right out of my seat. I thought a car or tree crashed into the house,” said another.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) indicated that several emergency services went to the area to look for the source of the explosion.

They visited the gravel pits on Sumas Mountain, and determined the boom was linked to blasting on site.

“No reported injuries or damage to property has occurred,” the APD stated.
