A woman who fell out of a kayak on Cultus Lake survived, thanks to the life jacket she was wearing.
Firefighters with Cultus Lake Fire Department, along with RCMP and paramedics, were called to the incident which happened on Monday afternoon (July 15).
"Upon receiving the call, both police and fire boats were deployed to the scene," Debbie Sargent with RCMP communications stated in a press release the following day.
RCMP said the woman, who went underwater was "visibly exhausted from swimming" when emergency crews reached her.
Firefighters grabbed the kayaker from the lake and brought her to shore. She was then tended to by paramedics with BC Ambulance Service.
"We are relieved to report that there were no injuries," said Const. Dewijn with Chilliwack RCMP. "This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of wearing a life jacket while engaging in water activities."
RCMP reminded people that wearing a life jacket can significantly increase the chances of survival in water emergencies, providing both buoyancy and a measure of safety until help arrives. They urge all residents and visitors to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets when participating in water activities. It is a simple precaution that can save lives and prevent tragic accidents.
The incident happened two days after Cultus Lake Park launched 'Kids Don't Float,' a water-safety program where people can borrow life jackets for free from Main Beach.
