Abbotsford has 51 grass fields, including this one at Clearbrook Park. The city is currently conducting a survey about sports fields and courts.

The City of Abbotsford is seeking input from local residents about the future of sports fields and courts in the community.

A survey is taking place until Dec. 2 for residents to share their thoughts on the current state of outdoor sports facilities and how future facilities should be prioritized.

The survey is part of the first stage of the city’s Sport Field and Sport Court Strategy that is expected to be completed in the fall or winter of 2025.

A press release from the city states that the strategy, among other things, will provide a guideline over the next 15-plus years for where the city should be spending its money on sports facilities.

The strategy will cover a wide variety of facilities, including fields and courts for outdoor sports, bike and skate parks, disc golf courses and other outdoor sports infrastructure such as lawn bowling and horseshoe pitches.

Abbotsford currently has 53 sports courts, 51 grass fields, five synthetic turf fields, and three mini synthetic turf fields.

In addition to the survey, community input is being collected through questionnaires for user groups and community organizations, engagement sessions with user groups and stakeholders, and an online mapping tool.

The public is also invited to in-person pop-up events on Friday, Nov. 15 at Matsqui Recreation Centre (MRC) and Friday, Nov. 29 at Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC). Both sessions run from 2 to 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, the survey can be completed online at letstalkabbotsford.ca or through paper copies available at MRC, ARC and city hall.
