An independent provincial election candidate has been announced for the Abbotsford South riding.

Amandeep Singh is a self-employed soccer and physical education coach for kids and also works as a kinesiologist.

Over the past year, Singh has participated in several protests across B.C., spoken at events and joined “parental rights” protests in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver.

“He advocates for lower taxes, fair distribution of resource revenue, support for seniors, protection for farmers, aid for truckers and health-care workers, affordable housing, reduced land costs, lower tuition fees, improved health-care access and the protection of parental rights,” his election website states.

Singh states that parents have the “fundamental right to raise their children according to their values, beliefs and cultural practices” and that “unnecessary government intervention … can be seen as an overreach of power and a threat to personal freedoms.”

Singh’s platform includes providing more support for seniors in areas such as health care, transportation, housing, and technology and accessibility.

For truckers, he proposes more rest areas and amenities, ongoing training programs, better access to health-care services, and competitive wages, benefits and protections.

He would also like to see better wages for health-care workers, as well as mental-health support, “reasonable” workloads and “adequate rest” to help prevent burnout.

Singh states that he hopes to challenge the “dominance of traditional political parties” and wants to remove “corrupt foreign interference” for all Canadians.

“The time for change is now as the current political system, entrenched in partisan interests, hinders progress and stifles the voices of everyday British Columbians and Canadians,” he says.

Singh, who calls himself as “a voice for the people,” faces opponents Bruce Banman (Conservatives) and Sarah Kooner (NDP) in the provincial election on Oct. 19.

Banman is the current MLA for the riding. He previously served with the BC United before moving to the Conservatives in September 2023.
