The Abbotsford Chess Club hosts an event at Mill Lake Park on Aug. 17.

The Abbotsford Chess Club is gearing up for a busy August, with an outdoor event planned for Mill Lake Park on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The inaugural Chess in the Park event will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the south side shelter in the park.

There will be a blitz tournament from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., which features two-player teams and an eight team knockout format. Blitz chess is also known as speed chess and is time controlled. Typically players will have 10 minutes or less total per game to complete all their moves.

The tournament has a $10 entry fee and top teams will earn cash prizes. In addition to the tournament, there will be casual chess available for free for anyone interested. No registration is required to play in the casual and untimed games.

According to the Abbotsford Chess Club's website, the relatively new club was formed on Sept. 21, 2022 and the inaugural games began at Abbotsford's Boardwalk Cafe and Games on Oct. 5, 2022. Games have continued there weekly ever since.

This summer saw the club expand to more weekly games at Abbotsford's Chaiiwala of London.
