A series of banners designed by UFV students will be unveiled in Steam Alley in Abbotsford on Thursday, Sept. 26.

A celebration in Abbotsford on Thursday, Sept. 26 will unveil banners designed by students at University of the Fraser Valley.

The Arts in the Alley Banner Celebration kicks off from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Steam Alley – a small publicly accessible space in downtown Abbotsford.

The event stems from a student-led project in a UFV course titled Community Planning and Development: Local Applied Studio.

It follows the first collaboration between UFV's newly established BRCP (bachelor of regional and community planning) program and the graphic design department.

From May to June 2024, UFV students explored human-centered design and sustainable development while addressing the challenges of activating under-used public spaces.

Through their efforts, students proposed Banners and Banter, a public event in June that included live music, local art, face-painting and the support of local businesses Banter Ice Cream and The Pastry Portal.

As well, students designed banners in which their vision of community engagement and sustainability could be expressed. Their designs are their vision of integrating inclusive, sustainable practices into urban planning.

A selection of the banners will be unveiled at the free open house on Sept. 26 at 33765 Essendene Ave. The public is invited to attend.

Project partners are UFV, the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association and Tourism Abbotsford.
