WEATHER: Rain to return as temperatures warm

After a month of snow and freezing temperatures, the typical soggy Lower Mainland winter is scheduled to resume normal services this week, with rain forecast for each day.

Here’s your Environment Canada forecast:

Today..Cloudy. Periods of rain beginning near noon. High plus 3.

Tonight..Periods of rain. Amount 5 to 10 mm. Temperature rising to 6

by morning.

Tuesday..Rain at times heavy. Amount 30 to 40 mm. High 8.

Environment Canada has also issued a special weather statement for the Fraser Valley:

“Many south coastal communities have had snow on the ground since December 5 but this is about to change. The persistent blocking ridge over Western Canada that allowed cold Arctic air to settle along the coast will finally start to weaken today. This will allow a series of moist and increasingly mild Pacific storms to move onshore.

“Satellite imagery shows a plume of moisture originating near the Philippines streaming towards the BC coast. Rain associated with this plume is expected to begin today and to become heavy at times tonight. Strong southeast winds will accompany the storms. There is potential for the moderate to heavy rain to continue until Wednesday morning.

“Areas along the immediate coast are expected to warm sufficiently so that precipitation begins as cold rain.”
