Abbotsford grads received more financial help from the province last school year, as there were more graduation program examination scholarship award winners for the 2011/2012 school year here.
The education ministry noted that some of the funds for the scholarships had gone unclaimed, and changed the criteria in a way that invited more students to apply.
Abbotsford School District students earned 249 provincial scholarships – a substantial increase from scholarships awarded in previous years (169 in 2011). This program rewards graduating students for academic excellence in their provincial examinations from grades 10-12. The $1,000 awards can be redeemed when a student enters a designated post-secondary institution.
In addition, 89 students received Dogwood District Authority Awards, worth $1,000 each, but split as a $500 cheque and a $500 voucher to a B.C. post-secondary institution. These were awarded in 16 categories.
