Free the Children Scavenger Hunt

Event being organized by Miss Teen Fraser Valley World 2013, Brittany Clough

For many children around the world today, life feels as if it is being lived within a cage. Limited or no access to regular education, clean water, sanitation or food is an everyday challenge of survival. Unstable economic, political and environmental climates further complicate existence so that the young simply fall by the wayside thus perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

For those of us with a comfortable life, the moral question of what can we do to help these children becomes imperative.

On Saturday May 11, one has a chance to help by participating in a “Free the Children” Scavenger Hunt hosted by the Free the Children Society and Shape Your World Society. The event takes place both in Chilliwack and Abbotsford and is being organized by Miss Teen Fraser Valley World 2013, Brittany Clough.

She has set a goal of raising $10,000 by the end of June 2013 for the Free the Children Society which is the Miss Teen Canada’s charity of choice. In Abbotsford, the Shape Your World Society is helping run the event with the top six contestants in the Total Makeover Challenge 2013 manning the end point and signing up willing businesses and teams to participate.

Businesses can help by signing up as ‘stop points’ on the hunt with teams visiting the businesses and collecting a stamp. The stores will be showcased on various social media sites and promoted in local newspapers, radio and Shaw TV. Individuals can help by signing up a team (max 5) and participating in the hunt, collecting points with mini challenges and donations. The objective for the teams in both communities is to rescue children from the ‘cages of poverty’ set up in Cottonwood Mall in Chilliwack and Sevenoaks Centre in Abbotsford. The team with the top points overall wins a week’s stay at a luxurious chalet in Sun Peaks (www.cornerstonechalet.com).
