Several local students win medals at BC Skills event

Several local students earned medals at the Skills BC competition on April 5 at Tradex in Abbotsford.

The event drew together more than 400 students from across the province to compete in 35 contest areas such as carpentry, culinary arts, fashion technology, automotive repair, hairdressing and more.

The competitors qualified for the contest after winning gold medals at regional events.

The gold-medal winners of the Skills BC event now advance to the national competition from May 31 to June 3 in Winnipeg.

Abbotsford students who won medals at the provincial competition were:

– Hayden Fast and Bailey Cryer of Robert Bateman Secondary – gold in 3D computer animation;

– Dallas Stevenson of W. J. Mouat Secondary – gold in electrical wiring;

– Michaela Sapielak of Abbotsford Senior Secondary – gold in architectural CAD;

– Baneet Braich and Jo-Raul Farley of Abbotsford Senior – gold in TV/video production;

– Melanie Sawatsky and Anna Whitlock of Robert Bateman Secondary – silver in 2D computer animation; and

– Nick Viger of W. J. Mouat Secondary – silver in architectural CAD.
