Abbotsford Senior Secondary School is the site of a Model United Nations conference on Saturday, Nov. 6.

A Model United Nations (MUN) event attended by high school students from across the province takes place this Saturday (Nov. 6) at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School.

MUN is a simulation of the real United Nations where students attend conferences and have the opportunity to think like global citizens by representing a country and debating on global issues.

The goal is to enable students to develop public speaking, confidence, and leadership skills.

Most of the 60 to 70 students attending the local event are from Abby Senior.

The event is being led by student Sourav Arora, who wanted to make MUN more accessible in Abbotsford during the pandemic.

“We wanted to make it accessible for everyone, so we created an online option so students from across the world or those who cannot make it to Abbotsford can still be a part of this,” Arora said.

Abbotsford MP Ed Fast will be in attendance as a guest speaker during the opening ceremonies of the conference.

There are four committees at AbbyMUN 2021, three of which are in person, and one of which is online.

The committees are UN Development Program, UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Disarmament and International Security Committee, and UN Security Council, with a broad range of real world global issues like access to clean water, the illicit arms trade, the Yemen crisis, and issues related to overfishing.

Registration for the conference is free, and information can be found at abbymun.com.
