Yale Secondary School’s musical theatre department presents its production of The Music Man, starting Feb. 11.

This is the school’s 28th annual production, and this year they have chosen to perform Meredith Wilson’s six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy that has been entertaining audiences since 1957.

The family-friend story s follows fast-talking travelling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef.

His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

The show is directed by Willis Taylor, who has been involved with Yale musicals for the last 20 years, with cameos in many of them.

He has directed many stage productions for the community and the school, and was last year’s director of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Musical director is Ron Jackson, a veteran of both the UFV theatre program and Gallery 7 Theatre. This is his third production with Yale Secondary.

Show times are 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 and 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 17 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre (2329 Crescent Way). Tickets are $15 and are available at the school or at the door.
