The Viano String Quartet performs in Abbotsford on Sunday, March 19.

The Valley Concert Society hosts the Viano String Quartet to the stage of the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Sunday, March 19.

The event starts at 3 p.m., and there will be a pre-concert talk in the foyer at 2:20 p.m.

The ensemble rose to international prominence with their first-prize finish at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2019.

Two members of the quartet are Canadian. Violinist Lucy Wang is from Vancouver while cellist Tate Zawadiuk grew up in Coquitlam. Violinist Hao Zhou and violist Aiden Kane are American.

They met while studying at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles and formed the quartet in 2015. Each of the musicians has also enjoyed success as solo artists performing with orchestras and in competitions.

The program on March 19 will feature two contrasting works from giants of the string quartet literature.

Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in D, Op. 64, No. 5 is a gem from the pen of the Father of the String Quartet. It is nicknamed The Lark because of the soaring violin melody in the first movement.

The second half of the program is all Beethoven. String Quartet No. 13 is one of his late quartets, a group often considered to be the pinnacle of string quartet writing, in which he took the structure laid down by Haydn and developed it to heights that may not have been equaled since.

The piece will be followed by the Grosse Fuge, a short work that was originally the last movement of the quartet No. 13.

The program will also include a work by Astor Piazzolla, the Argentinian father of tango nuevo, and a piece commissioned by the Viano String Quartet from Canadian composer Kevin Lau.

Tickets are available online at valleyconcertsociety.com at $32 for adults and $20 for students. For more information, call 604-289-3377.
