Tomorrow, Good Friday, at 3 p.m., Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd, will be hosting the Pacific Spirit Choir from West Vancouver under the direction of Gerald Van Wyck.

They’ll be teaming up with a string quartet led by Calvin Dyck to present the Seven Last Words of Christ, composed by Franz Joseph Haydn.

Seven Last Words of Christ was originally commissioned by the cathedral at Cadiz in Spain. It took Haydn approximately 15 years to complete the work which he considered one of his greatest.

Each of the seven sonatas are preceded by a reading of the appropriate quotation from Christ’s last seven statements on the cross.  Haydn also added an introduction and an epilogue titled Teremoto, symbolizing the earthquake after Jesus’ death.

The original orchestral version was so popular that Haydn arranged The Seven Last Words of Christ for string quartet and piano. Also on the program are a couple of short choral works, including Beethoven’s Elegischer Gesang and Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus.

Admission is by donation with a suggested donation of $10 or $25 per family.
