Season ending performance

Valley Concert Society presenting I Tromboni on May 3 in Abbotsford.

The regular season series of the Valley Concert Society comes to a close on Friday, May 3, with a concert that has special written all over it as I Tromboni is set to perform.

I Tromboni is a great combination, with the lush tones of five trombones.

The program has something for every taste from Johannes Brahms to Hoagy Carmichael, from the Russian classics of Mussorgsky to the classic James Bond theme song From Russia With Love, from the sentimental strains recorded by the Tommy Dorsey band to the sublime O Magnum Mysterium by Lauridsen.

Many of the works to be performed have been arranged by members of the ensemble, a fact clearly necessitated by the lack of composers who wrote pieces for five trombones.

The trombonists hail from all across our country, bookended by Andrew Poirier from Newfoundland and Neal Bennett from Langley.

At the show, the Valley Concert Society will also present this year’s winners of its two annual bursaries.

This great evening of entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way.

While at the concert, the public can purchase tickets for the society’s 30th Anniversary Celebration concert with Ben Heppner on May 27. This will be a rare  opportunity to hear a great Canadian tenor in Abbotsford.
