Richard Tichelman of Surrey was named the 2015 Abbotsford Idol at an event on Tuesday.


Richard Tichelman has won the title of Abbotsford Idol – and will perform in the opening act of the Canada Day Kickoff concert at the Abbotsford Centre on June 30.

After three qualification rounds through June, the finale was held on Tuesday evening at Finnegan’s Pub and Grill.

Tichelman, a 15-year-old from Surrey, beat out second-place winner Brooklyn Potter of Chilliwack.

The top five contestants were Tichelman, Potter, Danielle Severinkski of Pitt Meadows and Dan Kizmann and Alistair Hart of Abbotsford.

The Tichelman will now get the ultimate prize – launching Abbotsford’s Canada Day activities as an opener for big names acts including King & Cash, Aaron Pritchett, Beamer Wigley and headliners Emerson Drive.

Tichelman told The News said he’s had a constant smile since his win, the first singing competition he’s won.

At the Canada Day concert he is likely going to play a few crowd-pleasers and an original song.

“I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be super cool.”

He added that it’s going to be the biggest crowd he’s ever performed to.

The contest was sponsored by Murray GM and The News.

Paul Esposito Jr., of Finnegan’s, said the event was a great success, with the finale bringing in a “packed house” of people.

The Canada Day concert is at the Abbotsford Centre on Tuesday, June 30 at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.ca.
