American pianist Thomas Pandolfi performs in Abbotsford on Friday, March 4 as part of the Valley Concert Society series.

His visit will also include a workshop and a master class being offered in partnership with the Abbotsford branch of the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association.

All of the events are open to the general public.

The first workshop runs from 9 a.m. to noon on March 4, when Pandolfi will address two topics – interpretation in various styles of music and taking the fear out of reading and performing contemporary music.

A master class runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 5. Four of Abbotsford’s outstanding young piano students were selected to participate. All were winners in various categories in the Abbotsford Music Festival last spring.

Each student will have 30 minutes to work with Pandolfi. They have selected a short piece which they will play for him, and he will then offer feedback and together they will work on particular portions of the piece.

The workshop and master class take place at Peace Lutheran Church at 2029 Ware St., and there is a $10 fee to attend each one.

Pandolfi will perform at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315 South Fraser Way) at 7:30 p.m. on March 4.

The first half of the concert will concentrate mainly on the music of Frédéric Chopin. The second half of the program will include the music of George Gershwin, concluding with Rhapsody in Blue.

Tickets for the concert are $28 for adults and $15 for students. They are available online at valleyconcertsociety.com or by calling 604-289-3377.
