The Sabir Sisters Music Studio hosts its annual Old Time Barn Dance at Straiton Hall (4698 Upper Sumas Mtn. Rd.) on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The event is a fundraiser to promote youth folk music education from fiddling to step dancing and singing/songwriting.
This year’s dance features the music of Canadian Country Music Association award winner Mike Sanyshyn.
This third-generation fiddler is following in the tradition of his father and grandfather.
Over the years, he has played at numerous concerts and festivals; performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and recording artist Aaron Pritchett; and served as musical director for the B.C. Country Music Association Industry Awards.
Sanyshyn was named the B.C. provincial champion four times and placed in the top three at the Canadian GrandMasters Fiddling Championships, the best finish ever for a B.C. fiddler.
At the age of 22, he was selected to play for Mercury Recording artist Duane Steele in a band hand-picked from across Canada. Their first show was opening for Nashville stars Lorrie Morgan and Sammy Kershaw.
Sanyshyn’s signature sound has been recorded on hundreds of CDs, and millions have heard his fiddle on the Vancouver Olympics segment in Torino introducing Whistler 2010.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for the barn dance. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children and seniors, and $40 per family (two adults, two children/seniors).
