A new curator has been announced for The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford.

Laura Schneider leaves her position as director/curator of Cape Breton University (CBU) Art Gallery to join The Reach in mid-January.

Executive director Sheila Perry said Schneider was chosen for the position because she has strived to make the CBU Art Gallery a “stable portal for dynamic programming, arts education and community engagement.”

“She has developed a strong curatorial reputation that foregrounds current trends while recognizing the importance of regional representation and partnerships with other cultural organizations, including non-arts organizations and a variety of cultural bodies,” Perry said.

Schneider has worked and studied in the visual arts for more than 15 years in such reputable institutions as the Canadian Museum of Civilization (now the Canadian Museum of History) in Gatineau, Que., and the Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa.

She holds a bachelor of arts and master of arts in art history, and also has bachelor of education degree and a professional specialization certificate in collections management.

The public is invited to meet both Schneider and Perry at the opening reception for The Reach’s winter exhibitions on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the gallery, 32388 Veterans Way.
