A story of growth and strength was behind the latest video shoot for hometown country singer Kristal Barrett.

The 28-year-old teamed up with local video director Ryan Skeete of Earmark Creative to shoot Barrett’s video for Girl in a Car on Saturday, Aug. 13 at Granny & Grumpa’s Antiques in Abbotsford.

The single is the first from her second album, which was produced by local musician and vocal coach Darcy D.

While the single is going to hit airwaves in September, the album is currently unnamed and still in the works.

The concept of the song follows a young girl who is escaping a bad relationship.

“She’s done being that girl in the car driving away crying,” said Barrett.

“She breaks up with her bad boyfriend, her car is breaking down at the side of the road and then a handsome lad comes along.”

That handsome lad was played by Barrett’s husband.

A lot has changed for Barrett since her first album High On Life was released when she was 22.

For one, she filmed this recent video six months pregnant. She’s also matured in her sound.

After sifting through hundreds of songs  by the top song writers in Nashville, Barrett found the ones that most reflected what she’s learned over the years.

“It’s a totally different sound,” said Barrett. “There’s so much more maturity in it – it’s a more grown up album.”

She describes the new album as more upbeat with pop influences.

A video release party will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Finnegan’s at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and include a burger, a beer, a silent auction and a performance by Barrett.
