The music is queued, the lines form and the dance begins as a few dozen seniors practise the steps under the watchful eye of instructor Sharlene Williams.

The dance finishes with applause and lots of high-fives.

After a year and a half absence due to COVID-19 restrictions, line dancing classes have resumed at the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA) at 33889 Essendene Ave.

Williams has been the ASAA line dance instructor for 13 years and has been dancing for 21 years. One of the participants recently celebrated her 100th birthday after a 30-year membership.

The lessons take place Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Membership comes with reduced fees, as well as a vote in the running of the association.

The ASAA offers other recreational activities such as ballroom and social dancing with lessons, seniors’ exercise classes, crafts, pool, games and guitar/vocal jams.

The hall and the adjacent drop-in centre can also be rented out.
