Fraser Valley Stage presents its production of Shrek the Musical starting Friday, April 18 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre.
The prince isn’t charming; the princess is feisty; the donkey has attitude. And the unlikely hero is a reclusive green ogre who lives in a swamp.
“It's a show filled with energy, fun music, beautiful costumes, sets and sceneries, and the story is a feel-good adventure,” says director Dianna Fast.
"It's a family-friendly show, so it's a perfect choice for a family outing on the holiday weekend coming up.”
Seasoned performer Brady Moore is Shrek, a big green ogre very happy with his solitary life in the swamp until he crosses paths with the effervescent Donkey (Reece Doppenberg).
The two head off on a quest to rescue the independent and feisty Princess Fiona (Katrina Froese), who has other ideas.
The large cast of 30 portrays more than 75 characters, and backstage is a pretty busy place with lots of costume and makeup changes, says co-producer Kathy McWhinney.
“We think the audience will be thrilled with the full Shrek experience.”
Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in 2008, receiving many awards, including eight Tony Award nominations (including Best Musical).
Now after six months of intense rehearsals, it is almost showtime in Abbotsford.
“We’ve had a great time watching the show come together,” says co-producer Al Pattison.
“There is something for adults and kids alike with tender moments and silly humour too. The show has a great message: not to make judgments based on appearances.”
Shrek The Musical plays April 18-20 and 24-26 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way.
Evening shows are at 7:30 p.m. and matinees are at 1:30 p.m. Children will be able to meet Shrek and Fiona at the end of each matinee performance.
Tickets are $18 to $36 (plus fees) and are available at the box office at 778-780-2555 or online at fraservalleystage.com. Group rates are also available.
