En route to folk-festival performances in northern B.C., Cortes Island folk band Awakeneers perform in Abbotsford on Sunday, June 29.

The event at Edenvale Retreat Center (4330 Bradner Rd.) starts at 3 p.m. and features lyrical inspiration, stories and banter, and original songs set against a backdrop of acoustic instrumentation and sibling vocal harmonies.

“We’re really looking forward to this event," said Erica, songwriter and vocalist with the band.

“We performed at Edenvale back in 2018 and we’ve been looking forward to returning ever since. Having been invited to play at the Peace Valley Folk Festival this summer, as well as shows in Smithers, Williams Lake, and Nelson, it seemed like the perfect time to return to the beautiful setting at Edenvale.”

Currently based on Cortes Island, the Awakeneers are nomadic multi-instrumentalist songwriters, most of whom are siblings.

The band was formed in 2020, but all members of the Awakeneers have played together, under various band names, for more than a decade.

Collectively, they have written more than 400 songs and have performed together across the U.S., Canada and Europe, playing for audiences ranging in size from seven to 7,000 at festivals, conferences, concert halls and folk clubs.

As an independent self-managed band, they have built a strong hometown following with a unique approach to the music business that has included numerous local radio and TV performances, touring on a wooden sailboat, and giving away their music for free on a custom-built smartphone app.

Tickets are $20 at the door or $15 in advance at tickettailor.com/events/awakeneers/1732244
