The Abbotsford Film Society (AFS) has chosen Oscar winner Parasite as the third film in its inaugural series.

The film will be shown on Friday, Feb. 24 at The Banquet Room at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Rd. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the film starts at 8 p.m.

The screening meets the society’s mandate to show foreign films of merit. AFS president Aaron Dawson says Parasite is an incredibly well-made film that many have likely heard of but not seen.

“Even after its Oscar win, it didn’t receive a wide theatrical release,” Dawson said. “I had to drive to Langley to see it and I’m not sure that it ever played in Abbotsford.”

The South Korean film won four Oscars in 2019, including Best Picture – the first non-English film to win in this category in the history of the Oscars.

Dawson said for those who are not familiar with Korean or Asian cinema, this is a great “gateway” film and plays well with audiences. It’s unique in the way its plot twist makes it seem like one is suddenly watching an entirely different film.

Parasite is also filled with poignant social commentary, he said.

“Its universal message about haves versus have-nots is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was released,” Dawson said.

Along with the pre-screening talk, guests can enjoy themed snacks and drinks – and popcorn, of course. Memberships for the remainder of the season will also be available for purchase for $25, which gives members admission to five more screenings including Parasite.

Guests for the screening are asked to access the parking lot from Clearbrook Road and enter on the right (north) side of the building. Admission is $5 at the door.
