The Abbotsford Film Society (AFS) begins its third season on Friday, Sept. 27 with a screening of Oldboy from director Park Chan-wook.
The new season also includes some new venues.
“It’s the film that launched South Korean cinema on the world stage and has since become a classic,” he said.
The society’s third season highlights the mandate of the AFS to increase awareness and access to independent, arthouse, Canadian, foreign and classic films.
The season is an eclectic mix of films that demonstrate the evolution of film.
Following Oldboy, AFS will screen One Cut of the Dead (October), Speed Racer (November), Forbidden Planet (January), Enemy (March) and Sing Street (April), and close the season with George Lucas’ classic THX 1138 (May).
“This season is exciting because it mixes a wide variety of films, like Enemy, One Cut of the Dead, and Sing Street in particular,” Dawson said, adding that these films shed light on more recent films that fit with the society’s mandate.
“I’m also very excited about Forbidden Planet and THX-1138, two classic sci-fi films that don’t get talked about enough.”
AFS is also branching out to new venues. Oldboy will be screened at the Abbotsford Arts Centre's Community Arts Addition (2329 Crescent Way), and THX 1138 will be shown at the Abbotsford Arts Centre. The rest of the screenings will be held at The Banquet Room (at Emmanuel Mennonite Church).
Dawson hopes that people will take the time to view the information about each film on the society website and choose to come to a film to which they might not usually go.
“Take a chance,” he says. “You might find a film that you really like. Don’t be afraid to broaden your horizons.”
Doors for the screening of Oldboy open at 7:30 p.m., and the film starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $7 at the door or in advance at abbotsfordfilmsociety.com.
